Political status : 10th December 1999 : Fernando de la Rua (a radical) is elected president and creates a coalition government with the central-left wing. Both the election campaign and the handing over of power on 10th December 1999 took place in perfect conditions of democratic good citizenship, proving that democracy and political stability are now well established in Argentina. Economy : Following the devaluation of the Brazilian currency in February 1999, Argentina, which is following a strict parity with the dollar so as not to disrupt the reorganization of its banking sector, suffered a shock. It found itself closely bound, within a free trade zone, to a partner who was taking advantage of a competitive devaluation. [Read]

Main towns : Buenos Aires was founded in 1536. It was built on the edge of the Pampa on the right bank of the Rio de la Plata. It is an important port of call and plays a triple role of industrial, commercial and financial capital.
