Hotels & restaurants
(See Useful Addresses), there are plenty of different possibilities of accomodation

Hotels :
There are 5 different categories of hotels going from * to *****. They come in all shapes and sizes, ancient, modern, big, small, castles etc. During the tourist season an average hotel costs about £80 with breakfast included. Hotels usually have their own restaurants.

Guesthouses :
These are actually hotels which are smaller than the standard Irish hotel. They have a classification system like hotels : going from guesthouse* to guesthouse ****. The managers are usually the owners.

Manor houses:
These are old properties in the country, usually surrounded with huge gardens. They are often also classified like hotels or guesthouses. Some are still occupied by their owners who act as host during your stay.

Bed & breakfast:
As hotels are very expensive it is a good idea to use bed and breakfasts, the people are really friendly and the houses impeccable. You will often get a much nicer room for a much lower price than you would pay in a hotel. B & Bs are very closely controlled by the authorities and the standards are very high. You can find them in towns, but also in the countryside in farms or big houses.

Holiday houses and flats :
You usually have to book a long time in advance. There is a large choice of different kinds of houses or flats for rent and the prices vary depending on the region and the kind of accomodation.

Youth hostels :
There are about 150 hostels of different kinds throughout the country. Most of them are open all the year round but you have to make your booking in the summer.

Camping and caravaning :
About a hundred pieces of land are reserved for camping which are approved by the Irish Tourist Board.
You can rent a caravan or a camping car when you are in Ireland.
You are not allowed to camp anywhere in Ireland.

Restaurants :
There are no shortages of restaurants in Dublin, but in the smaller towns it is advisable to eat in the pubs where you will get a good hearty meal rather than in the hotel restaurants which are often the only alternative. The Irish breakfast is a hearty meal which can often see you through to the evening with only a snack lunch, you can even often have a 'breakfast' at lunch time if you have only managed your coffee and croissant earlier.
Sea food is recommended everywhere, and lamb.
