City Ville Guide

12 - Main towns
The capital of Sweden is Stockholm which has a population of 1,700,000.
Stockholm is a peaceful town. It is considered to be one of the world leaders as a dynamic centre of design. It is placed between the Mälar Lake and the Baltic Sea. The town was built on 14 islands, within an archipelego of 24,000 islands.
Gamla Stan, which is the oldest part of town is woven with passages and narrow streets dating from the Middle Ages. For seven centuries it has curled around the Royal Palace. The symbol of this Viking capital is the Town Hall which dates from 1911, it can be visited with a guide, you shouldn't miss the room which is gilded with 18,000 stone and glass mosaics.
The number of pedestrian areas and the amount and quality of public transport makes the use of a car unnecessary.
Stockholm is the main industrial centre of the country, but it is also a university town.

Göteborg has 750,000 inhabitants and is the second biggest town in Sweden. As the leading Scandinavian seaport, Göteborg has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and has been marked by the passage of English and Dutch immigrants. Over the last few years the town has become a major industrial centre and the cream of Swedish industry is installed there e.g. SKF and Volvo. Göteborg is a friendly town full of gardens and parks. The main avenue, the Avenyn stretches over nearly a kilometer, lined with trees, it is full of restaurants and cafes and ends up at the superb Beaux-Art museum, the theatre and the library.

Malmö, 520 000 inhabitants,

Uppsala, 175 000 inhabitants,

Norrköping, 160 000 inhabitants,

Orebro, 120 000 inhabitants.
