Main towns The capital of Venezuela is Caracas. There are 3.8 million inhabitants living there, more than half of them in shantytowns. Caracas is situated 24 kms from the sea which separates the town from the Sierra Del Avila (in the Miranda region). The Caracas airport is called Maiquetia. Barquisimeto is an important commercial centre situated at an altitude of 566 m with a population of 430,000 inhabitants. Maracaibo : (37 m above sea level) is an major petroleum centre to the north west of Lake Maracaibo. It has a population of 792,000 inhabitants. Maracay : (445 m above sea level) is in the region of Aragua. It is to the west of Caracas and has a population of 301,000 inhabitant living in the town centre. Valencia : Is situated to the west of Maracay in the region of Carabobo. There is a population of 700,000 and a large commercial centre.
