Employement in the service industries has evolved, growing in certain cases as in the tertiary sector along with its modernization, in spite of being weighed down by an excessive number of people. Banking is suffering from an economic crisis. Deflation has added to the difficulties of taking loans and caused a fall in the price of real estate. Wood is important in building, manufacturing furniture and utensils, it is also used for cooking and heating. As there is not enough in the country it is imported from Canada and Scandinavia. 28.1 million cubic meters were produced in Japan in 1992. The electrical industry has evolved, the manufacture of electrical goods has also risen. Videos, radios and colour TVs are exported worldwide and known for their high quality, rivalling with their German, Chinese or Dutch competitors.

Languages
Japanese is written in ideograms which form a complex system composed of katakana and hiragana.A fully educated person should know 1945 official ideograms. Someone who is less educated normally knows enough to read the newspaper. The education system guarantees that you learn them progressively. English is widely taught, but many older people only speak Japanese. More young people are learning French nowadays.

The climate is very variable as Japan stretches from north to south.
The winter tends to be dry and snowy and the summer is very hot, humid and rainy. The south of the country suffers from typhoons (taifun) in September, which sometimes destroy everything in their path.
Insects and Animals

 There is the 'popillia japonica', a metallic green and copper coloured beetle, which attacks plants but is destroyed by a kind of parasit wasp.The silk worm which feeds on mulberry leaves is bred to produce the precious silk. In summer, cockroaches (actually inoffensive) invade the town and the countryside
