Local cafes are always cheap and often very good.

Among these, there is 39 Trang Tiên St., in a blind alley not far from the opera. The place doesn't look much but the food is good. It's only open for lunch, the dishes change quickly because of the crowd of customers, which is a good way to judge the quality. Be there before 12.30 if you want a good choice, there is a generous helping of rice to which you add vegetables, peanuts, tofu, fish or meat. The price goes from 5,000 to 12,000 dongs, depending on what you take.

Go for dessert to Fanny, 48 Ly Thai Tô, where the ice cream is delicious.

Pho lovers should go to the corner of Nguyen Du and Phô Huê, which is open 24 hrs. There is Pho Bo (beef), Pho Ga (chicken), Pho Không Thit (without meat) : from 2,000 to 5,000 dongs.

For food which is a bit more sophisticated, cheap and good, there is an old house from French colonial days called Quê Huong, 42 Tan Bat Hô.

Lastly, for those who want the adventure of eating really 'local', there are the snake and dog restaurants along the embankment!
