71.3% of the working population are employed in the service sectors.
Tourism brought in 5.437 billion dollars in 1998.
Brussels is rated as the third biggest international congress organizer in the world, is the headquarters to some 1,250 international associations and is one of the leading towns in Europe where trade fairs are held.
Antwerp is the world centre of the diamond trade, 80% of the world's uncut diamonds are traded here and about half of the world's cut diamonds.

7 - Population

There are at present about 10,200,000 inhabitants in Belgium, the country has a high density rate of 334 inhabitants per sq. km.

Nearly 55% of the population reside in the Flemish area, 35% in the Walloons and 10% of the population in the Brussels' region. In the 854 sq. kms (3% of the country) around Aix-la-Chapelle there is a population of German origin. There are 66,000 inhabitants in the region of Liege.

97.18% of the population live in the towns.

Life expectancy is 77.87 years.

A total of 905,000 foreigners reside in Belgium, most of them coming from other European countries, 37% of them are Italians.

8 - Languages
Three languages are spoken in Belgium : French, Flemish and German. In the Flemish region the official language is Flemish (of Dutch origin), in the Walloons the official language is French, except in the province of Liege where German is spoken. In the Brussel's region both French and Flemish are spoken.

English is used more and more in business, particularly in Brussels with the headquarters of the European community being there.

Freedom of worship is practised.
Most of the country is Roman Catholic (75%)

Voltage : 220 V. European standards.
The metric system is in use.

11 - Money
The official currency is the Belgian Franc.
1 euro = 40.3399 FB
1 FF = 6.149 FB

Belgian currency can also be used in Luxemburg.
Coins : 1, 5, 20, 50 francs and 50 centimes (1/2 franc)

Notes : 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 10,000 francs

13 - Climate

The climate is changable, not very sunny with plenty of rain. It is milder on the coast than in the interior of the country, and gets colder towards the Ardennes. The best period for a visit is in the spring.
