Formalities
Entry formalities:
You can enter Belgium with only an identity card. There are no particular formalities to be completed by other members of the European community.

If you are going to reside in Belgium :
Fifteen days after your arrival you have to register at the foreign section of the municipality where you are residing.

You need the following documents to be able to register :
- proof of identity : a national identity card or a valid passport
- proof of residence : your lease or property act
- your family booklet if you are married or have children
- proof that you have a job : your contract or a certificate from your employer
- three identity photos
- 1000 BF in cash for the payment, cheques are not accepted

The formalities are the same for students, with proof of enrollment in a school or university replacing the proof of employment. You also have to prove that you can pay for your studies and your stay, or that your parents are willing to do so.

Your residence card will not be given immediately, you will first be given a provisional card (valid for 3 months and renewable). Your resident's card will be valid for a five year period.

Other formalities, for instance your registration on Health and Welfare and other social security benefits will be dealt with by your employer.

It is a good idea to register with your embassy or consulate.
